It’s my weekend again, which means we were out having an adventure this afternoon. We went to San Jacinto Monument and Battlefield, which is just down the road from us.

This is the monument itself. San Jacinto is the place where Santa Anna’s army was defeated by Sam Houston and his Texian army in 1836 during the Texas Revolution. There is a museum and a theater here, plus you can go up to an observation deck near the very top.

Here are some of the views from the observation deck. The monument is on the Houston Ship Channel, and you can see tankers and barges, along with some of the chemical and oil plants that line the channel and highways in La Porte. We could vaguely see the Houston skyline in the distance, which is 20 miles away. It was not very clear today.

To the right of the reflecting pool, you can see the Battleship Texas. It’s also part of the park, but we did not tour it today.

After we watched the movie and walked through the museum, we ate lunch at Monument Inn. The restaurant’s windows face the ship channel, and we watched different tankers and tugboats and barges go back and forth while we ate. We crossed the ship channel on the รูเล็ตออนไลน์Lynchburg ferry, which has been operating since 1822–although it is a modern ferry now! I don’t think I have ever been on a ferry before. We saw a roseate spoonbill fly over while we waited for the ferry to fill up.

We drove in to Baytown, since my daytrip book mentioned their wetlands center. It was a pretty nice nature center–we harassed the large blue crab in the touch tank that had its pincers removed (but it still jumped at you if you held your hand over it), saw the baby gators, and looked at the beehive, among other things. Then we got on the road and drove back home, this time crossing the ship channel by bridge.
